The goal of STARS is to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values in middle and high school students.  In turn, these will help them choose healthy behaviors, avoid risks such as use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs, and demonstrate and maintain a commitment to sexual abstinence.  This is done through character training, and teaching the positive results that will come from making good decisions.  High school students make a commitment to remain abstinent and mentor middle school students in a fun after-school club setting.

Is your child interested in being a part of the STARS program? If so, you need to sign a few permission slips which you can open and print below. If you have any questions, please email Nicole or call our Real Life STARS office today at (937) 845-0403.

Permission Slips:

Take a look around you. What advertisements are you seeing right now? What is the company using to sell their products? SEX! Sex sells everything from phones to clothing; from food to cars. As a concerned parent you should be actively listening and watching the movies, TV shows, and music your children are listening to and hear the message the media is placing on your children about sex, drugs and violence. Below are a few tips that may help you.

Remember these things:

  • Adolescents stop hearing you only when you’ve stopped saying something
  • Conflict with your child about what they watch or listen to is OK
  • Don’t put down the type of music (movie, TV show…) but rather the lyrics or message

Here are some helpful ideas to help you monitor what your child is watching and listening to:

  • No computer/TV in bedroom
  • Set rules and stick to them
  • Co-view TV with your kids
  • Turn the TV off when no one is watching
  • Communicate with other parents about the rules you have set
  • Pay attention to the message a song, TV show or movie is giving to your child
