Women's Network: Parent Information

Take a look around you. What advertisements are you seeing right now? What is the company using to sell their products? SEX! Sex sells everything from phones to clothing; from food to cars. As a concerned parent you should be actively listening and watching the movies, TV shows, and music your children are listening to and hear the message the media is placing on your children about sex, drugs and violence. Below are a few tips to help you and some websites you can go to to help you be more informed.

Remember these things:

  • Adolescents stop hearing you only when you’ve stopped saying something
  • Conflict with your child about what they watch or listen to is OK
  • Don’t put down the type of music (movie, TV show…) but rather the lyrics or message

Here are some helpful ideas to help you monitor what your child is watching and listening too:

  • No computer/TV in bedroom
  • Set rules and stick to them
  • Co-view TV with your kids
  • Turn the TV off when no one is watching
  • Communicate with other parents about the rules you have set
  • Pay attention to the message a song, TV show or movie is giving to your child
